The EU Commission’s proposed seed law is a threat to farmers’ right to seeds and biodiversity in the EU. European agriculture ministers and the EU parliament must be convinced to protect farmers rights and defend the conservation and sustainable use of local varieties.
Call for urgent and important changes to the EU seed regulation proposal, by 139 organisation and 170,000 citiziens. The proposal favours the interests of industrial agriculture over both the rights of farmers and the conservation of agrobiodiversity in the EU.
While an improvement on the EU Commission’s draft, the EU Parliament resolutions to be put into law still fail to support agrobiodiversity conservation. But there is still time for EU Member States to act.
The document delves into crucial topics such as scope, definitions, rules for conservation organizations, and the exchange of Plant Reproductive Material (PRM) between farmers. Additionally, it discusses conservation varieties, Organic and Heirloom Material ((O)HM), obligations of professional operators, and governance. While not exhaustive, we believe it offers a valuable overview of the EP’s stance on these critical matters.
