Today’s food production is dependent on a small number of crops. By bringing old varieties back to the fields, the diversity of crops can be increased on farms. A Finnish projects shows that the special raw materials that are old seed varieties can bring economic value as food and associated services.
From 27-29 October 2022, the 11th Liberate Diversity Forum took place in Budapest, also to celebrate 10 years of activity of Maghaz, Hungarian members of the European Coordination. The programme included 12 workshops, from political-legislative to practical and concrete aspects for the use and conservation of agrobiodiversity, 2 international seed exchanges and 2 bread and beer tastings from local varieties. Grounded in UN human rights declaration and inspired by a policy analysis comparing EU and Indian legislation, this research provides EU policy recommendations to embed rural citizens’ human rights in the EU plant variety right system.
Following the adoption of the UNDROP in 2018, it has now started the implementation phase of this instrument. The aim now is to concretely apply each part of the declaration, both at the local/national and international levels.
Recently, OpenSourceSeeds has tried out whether the development of a new variety can be financed with a crowdfunding campaign. With success: the first harvest is expected in 2023.
