LLD Forum Side Event Farmers’ Seed Systems in the Region of Central Asia and Eastern Europe: Experience, Challenges and Future Directions, 24 May 2026, Florence, Scandicci, Italy
This presentation, delivered by Muhabbat Mamadalieva of NGO Zan va Zamin, reviews the current situation and prospects for community-based seed systems in Tajikistan. It outlines Tajikistan’s rich agrobiodiversity (noting the Vavilov centre region), traces historical shifts from centralized Soviet seed production to post-Soviet market pressures and loss of traditional knowledge, and highlights threats from the spread of imported hybrid seeds. The presenter proposes awareness-raising, promotion and support for farmer seed custodians, revival and use of locally adapted varieties, and development programs to strengthen community seed systems. Planned actions include establishing community seed banks in four provinces, training (including international expert workshops), exchange tours, festivals and seminars, and strengthening the role of women seed custodians in line with the 2026 International Year of Women Farmers. The presentation lists several existing women’s seed groups and seed bank activities and emphasises community-led conservation and improved access to adapted seed to enhance household resilience to climate change.
