SPD#2: New Genetic Engineering

To discuss policy developments that affect crop diversity movements, the European Coordination Let’s Liberate Diversity (ECLLD) has launched a series of virtual Seed Policy Dialogues in April 2021. Built as a monthly exchange meeting with lawyer Fulya Batur, ECLLD Members and all interested parties, the Dialogues analysed the monthly "Sprouts From Brussels" newsletter and discussed a wide range of topics related to seeds, with precious external contributions, and interpretation into French (at times also Italian and German). In April 2021, the SPD covered the topic of new genetic engineering.

In April 2021, the SPD covered the topic of new genetic engineering, asking the following questions:

What’s the state of play of new techniques of genetic engineering? What’s the legal process in Europe? What are the risks for sustainable development and competitiveness of agriculture?

The dialogue was enriched with a contribution from Frederic PRAT, from Info’GM, who focused on the legal status quo, and the challenges made to its implementation in France. You can watch the presentation of the Sprouts, along with a more detailed overwiew of the legal developments related to GMO’s in Europe (in English), and Frederic PRAT’s presentation on the legal battle against new genetic modification techniques in France below (in French).
