Using open-source resistance to ToBRFV in participatory tomato breeding in Austria

ARCHE NOAH presents participatory tomato breeding work in Austria using open-source ToBRFV resistance, breeding objectives, patent challenges, available resistant materials, and planned resistance testing (2026–2027).

This presentation describes ARCHE NOAH’s participatory tomato breeding work in Austria, coordinated through two breeding networks (Bauernparadeiser and SamenTräger:innen). The programme aims to develop open-pollinated, disease-resistant and productive tomato varieties for organic production and home gardens, with targets including flavour, uniform fruit colouring, high marketable yield and resistances to pathogens such as Fulvia fulva, Verticillium, Fusarium, ToMV and ToBRFV. The slides discuss the patent landscape for ToBRFV resistance (2018–2023), citing analyses by No Patents On Seeds and examples of resistant material: some lines under non‑exclusive license with fees (Volcani Center), while other accessions are publicly available or described as open-source (USDA/ARS, TGRC). Planned work includes pilot inoculation tests in 2026 and plant-by-plant resistance tests and first crossings in 2027. The presentation invites collaboration with tomato breeders and raises the practical question of handling patents in breeding programmes.
