Four Years of LiveSeeding. A Legacy That Keeps Growing.
After four years of research, innovation and collaboration, the LiveSeeding project has reached its conclusion.
Since 2022, 37 organisations from 16 countries have worked towards a shared ambition: making organic seeds and diverse cultivars more accessible, strengthening organic plant breeding and helping Europe move towards 100% organic seed use by 2036.
Together, we have explored new approaches to plant breeding, cultivar testing, seed production, market transparency and policy development.
As we close this chapter, we want to share something that will continue to make a difference beyond the project’s lifetime: the knowledge, tools and resources that remain available for everyone to explore, use and build upon.
Practical knowledge, ready to use
How can the knowledge generated through four years of research and collaboration support farmers, breeders, seed producers and other stakeholders in their everyday work?
LiveSeeding has brought together its key findings in seven accessible booklets: six thematic publications covering the project’s main areas of work and one general booklet highlighting the project’s overall results and impact.
To make this knowledge accessible across Europe, the project has also invested in translating these booklets into 10 European languages, supporting their use in national and regional contexts.

Knowledge sharing has been at the heart of LiveSeeding.
Throughout the project, partners developed training materials covering organic plant breeding, cultivar evaluation, high-quality seed production, regulatory aspects and entrepreneurship in the organic seed sector.
These resources include presentations, webinar recordings, practical exercises, step-by-step guidance and self-paced learning opportunities.
A highlight was the LiveSeeding Summer School, which brought participants together for lectures, hands-on learning, field visits, and exchanges with experts in organic plant breeding and seed systems.

The end of LiveSeeding does not mean that the challenges facing organic seed systems have been resolved.
Reaching 100% organic seed use by 2036 will require continued cooperation between farmers, breeders, seed suppliers, researchers, policymakers and public authorities.
LiveSeeding’s roadmap, policy briefs and recommendations provide evidence and practical guidance to support this transition, from improving the availability of organic seed to creating a more enabling regulatory environment.

Beyond publications and training materials, LiveSeeding has contributed to the development, testing and use of digital tools that support more transparent, collaborative and accessible organic seed systems.
• seeds4organic – supporting access to information on organic plant reproductive material and improving transparency in the European organic seed market.
• SeedLinked – enabling decentralised cultivar testing and the collaborative collection and sharing of field observations.
• OHMTrack – supporting the notification and traceability of Organic Heterogeneous Material.
• SHiNeMaS – supporting the management and analysis of data from participatory plant breeding activities.
Together, these tools illustrate how digital innovation can help connect information, research and practical decision-making across the organic seed sector.
Looking back on the final conference
On 10 June 2026, more than 100 participants gathered in Brussels for the LiveSeeding Final Conference, bringing together research, practical experience and policy perspectives.
The event reflected on the progress achieved over four years and highlighted the continued efforts needed to strengthen organic seed and plant breeding systems across Europe.
It was also an opportunity to celebrate the partnerships, knowledge and experiences developed throughout the project.
