WS 5 – Seed Health, Plant Health
Main objective of the workshop
Our aim is to explore the perspective of system health rather than reducing the scope of seed health to seed sanitation.
In this context, certain interventions such as seed treatments are sometimes necessary but their collateral effects are not
fully known.
The workshop comprises 2 parts. The first will consist of a discussion among participants about the systemic approach
to seed health. This discussion will integrate the whole environment in which the seed evolves throughout seed
production and dissemination, and not just its intrinsic quality. It will also provide an opportunity to discuss the
intervention practices implemented by practitioners and the link that can be made between these practices and a systems
approach.
In the second part, we will take a closer look at the management of 2 specific diseases,(i) Susanne Gura (Dachverband
Kulturpflanzen- und Nutztiervielfalt) will examine ToBRF virus in tomatoes, as an example of how plant health risks are
managed in industrial agriculture (and interactions with farmers’ and seed savers’ seed networks), and (ii) Gaspard de
Tournemire (ITAB) will report on a project about common bean blight management in common bean.

presentation for the second part
