WS 8: NGTs and Patents: How Can We Grow Without Them? Updates on Political Debates and Cooperation Amongst Organic Breeders and Growers
In this workshop we will present the latest research in regards to patents being granted and applied for on traditional breeding in Europe and give an overview about the political discussions around patents and NGTs in the EU. Together with the participants we want to facilitate an exchange about how breeders can navigate this difficult political landscape, how they can work together and what steps can be taken to saveguard traditional breeding in Europe. ARCHE NOAH will present an open source breeding programme working on a resistance to the TBRV virus in tomatoes. Grietje Raaphorst-Travaille from Nordic Maize Breeding will talk about her experience as an organic breeder that has been directly affected by patents.
