WS 5: EU Seed Law Reform – What Does It Mean for Fields and Plates, and How Can We Safeguard Seed Diversity? – Advanced Workshop

Audience (IMPORTANT)

This workshop is designed as an advanced exchange for participants who are already familiar with, or directly involved in, discussions around the EU seed law reform. Participants who are new to the topic are welcome to join, but the session will assume a prior understanding of the reform process, in order to focus on current developments, practical implications, and possible collective responses to safeguard seed diversity.

Description

This workshop will provide a space to discuss the reform of EU seed legislation, which is in its final phase, and its potential implications for cultivated biodiversity, farmers’ seed systems, and the diversity of food available in our fields and on our plates. Please note that it is an advanced workshop focussed on individuals and organisations that have been in touch with the seed marketing reform already.

The session will present the key issues at stake in the reform process, focusing on how the new seed law will influence the conservation, exchange, marketing, and use of diverse plant varieties.

Through discussion and exchange, participants will reflect on what the legal changes to be expected will mean for farmers, seed savers, small-scale producers, gardeners, breeders, and consumers and what can still be done for a more diversity-friendly law.
