Following an initiative tabled by the European Parliament in 2013, the European Commission (DG Agriculture and Rural Development) contracted two preparatory actions on EU plant and animal genetic resources in agriculture.

The first preparatory action was launched in July 2014 for a period of two years and the second in January 2016 for a period of three years.

The aim of the first preparatory action was to deliver inputs on how to improve communication, knowledge exchange and networking among all the actors potentially interested in the conservation of genetic resources in agriculture. In addition, the first preparatory action aimed to find ways towards a sustainable and economically viable use of these resources.

The objectives of the second study are to provide inspiring examples of how to make the conservation of neglected breeds and varieties economically viable and encourage farmers and other stakeholders to engage in similar projects across the EU.

The results of the first preparatory action are available on the European Commission DG AGRI web site and the reports of the second study will be made available on the same website by early 2019.

ProSpecieRara rod market

Sunday, 14 October 2018 10:00 to 17:00 hrs

Heiternplatz, Zofingen
When it smells of roasted pork sausages, when you see the specialities on offer, your mouth waters, children forget everything about themselves when they see the rare copper neck goats and you are only amazed at the incredible variety of fruits - then you are at the ProSpecieRara rod market in Zofingen.
With over 50 market drivers from large parts of Switzerland, the ProSpecieRara rod market offers a wide variety. All suppliers have in common that they sell at least some of their products under the ProSpecieRara seal of approval. This means that the products are made from rare cultivated plant varieties or livestock breeds. This way you can convince yourself on the market of the uniqueness of the wooly pork bacon as well as of the qualities of the old berry varieties in the liqueur - and through consumption help that these varieties and breeds survive. Because only what is in demand is bred.
Determine fruit varietiesDo you have a pear whose variety you don't know? The experts of ProSpecieRara determine your variety on site. Just bring some typical ripe, edible fruits and ask the professionals.

A free shuttle bus runs regularly from Zofingen station to Heiternplatz. Access by car is only possible for disabled persons.
