EDITORIAL
The concept of Farmers' Rights was born in the early eighties, and was formally recognized by the FAO Conference towards the end of the decade. How did the legislation evolved since then? And which are the main elements in peasants’ rights to seeds?
Farmers' Rights are critical to ensuring the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and consequently for food security – today and in the future. In its Article 9, the International Treaty recognizes the enormous contribution that the local and indigenous communities and farmers of all regions of the world have made (particularly those in the centers of origin and crop diversity).
As Let's Liberate Diversity!, European network for on-farm management, we are starting a two-way process to talk about this important issue. First, we will deal with the FAO treaty, then in the October Seed Policy Dialogue, we will deal with it within the UNDROP declaration.
