Seed Policy Dialogue

What's the issues with the patent on barley owned by Carlsberg?
Which could be the impacts such patents can have as these might also be granted on vegetables, fruits and other food plants?
Which are and what are open-source seed initiatives?

We will dialogue with lawyer Fulya BATUR that makes a general presentation of the newsletter "Sprout from Brussel" and the highlights of patents on organisms.

Afterward, Johanna ECKHARDT from NO PATENTS ON SEEDS!, will show recent developments on patents on seeds and will bring fresh news from the Symposium of the German Ministry "Patentability of Plants and Animals: Scope for Action and Need of Reform?".

Finally, Johannes KOTSCHI will make a presentation considering "Seed as a commons - the Global Coalition of Open Source Seed Initiatives"

The webinar will be in English, Francais.

EDITORIAL

The german symposium (here more info) will examine the status quo surrounding the patenting of animals and plants and will explore possible areas of reform as well as avenues for the further development of the law. With this event, the German Ministry wants to help kick-start a discussion among the Member States of the European Patent Organisation and the European Union and create momentum for the further substantive exploration of this issue at European level.

We, as Let's Liberate Diversity! community also starts a discussion and after a short summary of the state of the art from the german meeting, we will also look at visible realities or possible ways forward with open-source initiatives.
