Ever wondered what a seed truly is? These tiny living entities contain the blueprint of life, giving us the food, fibers, fuel, and materials we rely on.
|
Seeds can enter dormancy, a natural pause that allows them to survive tough conditions. This ability is key to gene banks, like the one at Agroscope in Switzerland, where seeds are preserved to protect our agricultural diversity. But while gene banks safeguard countless seeds, the diversity we see in our fields and on our plates has drastically shrunk. Today, just a handful of crops dominate, controlled by a few big corporations. So, where did all that diversity go? And why don't we think about the story behind seeds when ? let?s say ? we throw an apple core?

We are proud to present SEED CARRIERS, an audio documentary series initiated by the artist-run association Institut Plapamco and the Let's Liberate Diversity! network. This series explores the intersection of art, activism, and science, delving into the vital practices of seed sharing, the complex relationships between humans and plants, and the deeply intertwined history of plant domestication.

Cultivating diversity for resilient and inclusive communities: a workshop with seed savers, migrants, farmers and gardeners organised by the Erasmus+ project DiverseSeedPath.

Let's Liberate Diversity! recently participated in an online event hosted by Pro Specie Rara, one of our members, to welcome a Chinese delegation at their headquarters in Switzerland. This was a significant step in our ongoing efforts to strengthen international collaboration and exchange knowledge on cultivated biodiversity.

|
|
|
|
From May 29-31, 2024, the second European Citizens' Initiative Forum for the Right to Food was held in Geneva, Switzerland. The event brought together over 70 participants who engaged in various working groups over the three days, initiating a collaborative process to advocate for the right to food. Soon the petition will be launched!

Invitation to an Online Policy Workshop on the Proposed New EU Regulation on the
Production and Marketing of Seeds and other Plant Reproductive Material (PRM)

There will be translation provided from English to French and German!

The aim of the workshop is to provide cultivated plant diversity actors and peasant organisations with information on the current state of the political process, and to foster effective action and collaboration by these actors to advocate for a regulation that protects and promote diversity and the implementation of the right to food and the right to seeds recognised in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP).

NEWS from the communities

The INRAE has recently published a free-to-download eBook by the title 'Protecting crops through plant diversity' in the context of project Ecophyto 2+ meant to reduce the use of synthetic pesticides to protect public health. This book is intended for research and teaching purposes, as well as agricultural, environmentaland citizen stakeholders.

|
The second volume of results from the AE4EU European project's mapping exercise an agroecology in Europe was published. It includes material on Denmark, France, Hungary, Ireland, Moldova, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and
the UK.
|
|
|
|
|
|
The struggle for land and the preservation of seed diversity are deeply interconnected. As land is increasingly monopolized by large entities, the diverse farming systems maintained by small-scale farmers and seed savers are being eroded.

Sow your Resistance International Gathering (hosting the LLD Forum)

This edition of the Forum is hosted at the International farmer seed gathering ?Sow Your Resistance? with an unique programme offering a wide range of activities, events and workshops. There is one unique registration that gives you access to both the International meeting and the 13th edition of the LLD Forum.

The annual session of the UPOV will be held in Geneva in October 2024. More information on the various meetings is available in the UPOV online calendar of events.

Building on the outcomes of the previous meetings of the Forum, this event will explore proficuous ways to participate in the value chain.

The EU Commission's original proposal on seed law threatens crop diversity. The amended text adopted by the European Parliament is largely in favour of traditional and rare varieties. The Council's position is currently still being negotiated but appears to be significantly worse than the European Parliament's position. We therefore need the commitment of as many citizens as possible over the coming months to save diversity!
