New year, new challenges!
Holidays and celebrations may now seem like distant memories, but as we step into the new year, the challenges ahead loom large. Amidst the optimism for a fresh start in 2024, we are facing new challanges threatening the very fabric of our agricultural landscapes and food systems.
|
Recent developments within the European Parliament's Environment Committee (ENVI) have given rise to concerns regarding the regulation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These actions have far-reaching implications, directly impacting the rights of both farmers and consumers. The decision to remove safety checks, labelling requirements, and liability processes for the new generation of genetically modified organisms, commonly referred to as "New Genomic Techniques" (NGTs), signals a shift that would compromise the transparency and safeguards crucial to both agricultural and consumer interests.
|
In the face of these critical developments, our collective efforts take on added significance. The upcoming decisions in the European Parliament, particularly the plenary vote in February, will play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of GMO regulations in the European Union. Your continued engagement is crucial as we work towards a future where technological advancements coexist harmoniously with the core values that underpin our visions of bringing diversity back into our food systems. Together, let us navigate the complexities of 2024 and emerge with alteratives that ensure the well-being of our communities and the sustainability and diversity of our food systems.

Can this financial influx truly drive positive change, or might it inadvertently support questionable practices under the guise of agroecology? The need for transparent, accountable, and community-driven initiatives is paramount to avoid the pitfalls of appropriation.

Our current agriculture and food system are not sustainable: they threaten our health, destroys our ecosystems and contribute to climate breakdown. We cannot rely on incremental innovation and need to act now, together, to provide prosperity, wellbeing and food security for farmers, food producers and citizens in the future.
